Third Party Insurance Guidance - Ratae R.C.

Third Party Insurance - Guidance Note for Members of The Ratae Road Club

From time to time the Club receives enquiries from members about the Insurance Cover provided by the Policy we have taken out with Cycling UK.

This note is intended to clear up any previous misunderstandings, and give some guidance and advice regarding the liabilities of indivdual members.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Club's Insurance Policy only covers claims for injury or damage caused to a third party, made against the Club, it's officers or Ride Leaders that might arise from an incident during a Club or organised ride.

The Club wishes to make it clear that individual members of the Club are NOT covered by the Club's insurance.

This means that, if you cause injury or damage to a third party ( who for example, could be a fellow rider on a Club run, or any other road user ), a claim may be taken out against you.

We therefore offer this guidance as to what you should do to minimiise your risk to a claim for damages.

The Ratae Road Club strongly recommends that every member arranges his or her own third party insurance cover.

Third Party Insurance is offered as an inclusive part of membership of both CyclingUK and British Cycling, ( see their website for details ).  You can arrange cover through some Home Insurance Policies or purchase a stand alone Policy.

In giving this guidance the Club wishes to make it clear that it is not authorised to give advice on which type of Insurance suits you, nor is it making any recommendations regarding taking out CyclingUK or British Cycling membership.  Please shop around for the best cover for your types of riding.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Club Committee are indebted to, and would like to thank John Fox for his research into this complex area to produce the valuable advice that he has set out above.

The Committee strongly agrees with John that individuals should take out their own personal insurance, as he recommends.

Bob Perrett has asked for this note to be added to the item ( 10th September 2017) :-

I have just received the request from Cycling UK (used to be CTC) for the renewal of our Affiliation (£75.00).

Amongst other things, it contains the following reminder for individual club members wishing to obtain personal third party insurance through Cycling UK affiliate membership.

“Please note that you need to provide Cycling UK with your club/group membership number 8002026 for this organisation to be able to complete your application to become an affiliate member.”

Review by John Fox - 19th February 2018

Re our CyclingUK insurance, I’ve checked the cover for “affiliated bodies” which was updated on 5/12/2017, but with no significant changes.

The Club has cover for injury or damage claims against the club or its officers during organised rides/events which are either:

  • “primarily for our members” (Club runs and Chain Gang).
  • or
  • “rides which are for both members and the public” (Reliability and Rouleur).
  •

Cover is for officers involved in the running of the ride/event whether they are ride leaders, marshals or similar

The mandatory provisos are that the ride:

  • has less than 200 riders.
  • we are aware of all riders’ names (can be collected orally or in writing).
  • does not exceed one day in duration.
  •

The guidelines provisos are:

  • non-members should not take part in more than three rides.
