Sponsored Ride - 26th April 2014 - For 'Futures Unlocked'

I am a founder trustee of the charity Futures Unlocked which provides a volunteer mentoring service to ex-prisoners returning to Leicester, Leicestershire, Rutland and Warwickshire. The charity aims to improve the life chances of ex offenders, reduce reoffending, reduce crime and build safer communities. Nationally the reoffending rate is around 58-60% which is a great concern as this results in more and more victims. A recent study of the Futures Unlocked clients showed that only 17% had reoffended thus demonstrating that supporting ex offenders through mentoring can help to reduce reoffending.
The charity achieves this success by working with prisoners in the last few months of their sentence to help set goals for their release and support them through the resettlement process. Mentors are available to meet their clients at the gate on release and support them in the first few months afterwards. This involves helping them to access benefits, housing, training, employment and support services such as substance misuse and mental health services.

Futures Unlocked is broadening its funding strategy to help offset the difficulties that all charities are facing in securing sufficient money to continue operating. As part of this it is organising a sponsored ride called ‘Cycle for Change 2014’ on Saturday 26 April from Countesthorpe to Rugby and back. My thanks go to those club members who have already made a donation by the old paper based method approved by Jim York. If you would like to sponsor me personally then please use this method. Alternatively, you can support Futures Unlocked’s work by going online to www.thebiggive.org.uk and under keyword add Cycle for Change 2014 where details of the event will come up with an opportunity to donate. If you are a tax payer the organisation will also be able to receive Gift Aid which will increase your gift by 25%.

Ratae club members and other local riders might like to join in the ride and collect their own sponsorship for Futures Unlocked. The event, which is being supported by Skyride Leicester who are planning the route and providing group leaders for riders of different abilities, will, I understand include lunch and a post event meal for those taking part. If you would like to join in please contact me directly or by e-mail on This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it
