Obituary - A Tribute to Ted Page

A Tribute to Ted Page

Edward Beynon Page, known as Ted Page in the cycling world, died on the 9th of September 2016.  He is survived by his wife, Cynthia, his four children, Debbie, Mark, Allan and Sally and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Ted had a lifelong commitment to learning and teaching.  His early vocational training, which took place at Westminster Technical College, led to a distinguished career as a chef at a number of leading London hotels.  However his thirst for knowledge was matched by an equally strong desire to teach others.  Consequently, after several years in the hospitality industry, he undertook a course of teacher training at Garnett College of Education ( Technical ).  This was followed by lecturing posts at a number of colleges of further education in different parts of the country.  He quickly progressed through the ranks in FE and in 1978 became Head of Catering at Southfields College in Leicester, ( now part of Leicester College ).

Ted was committed to maintaining a high level of personal fitness, which included cycling.  He joined the Ratae Road Club soon after coming to Leicester and enjoyed a range of activities, including time-trialling and club walks, some of which involved mad days out in the summer, travelling to the coast by mini bus.  In 1991 changes in work commitments left less time for cycling, however he re-joined the club in the mid 2000's and renewed his interest in walking for leisure with the club's walking section.  In his latter years he preferred cycling off-road and, in November 2013, joined a number of Ratae members on an unforgettable ride around Rutland Water in glorious sunshine.

Unfortunately in 2016 he was diagnosed with a virulent form of cancer which proved to be terminal.   He spent his last few weeks at the Loros hospice for the terminally ill, with his family and friends around him.  He faced his impending demise with equanimity and much courage.  During these last weeks he set out in some detail the arrangements for his funeral rites, which included a celebration of his life.  This took place on the 13th of October at Roots Farm Shop, with which he had enjoyed a long association.  The celebration was held in a barn and was entirely conducted by his children and son-in-law.  It included excerpts from his favourite music, poetry and readings, interspersed with periods of of reflection and eulogies by his children.  It was an inspirational experience for all the invited guests and culminated with a pre-recorded message from Ted, who had been present throughout on a catafalque, appropriately formed by bales of hay.  In this way he was able to thank everyone for coming.  The celebration then concluded, in a most fitting manner given Ted's catering background, with an informal afternon tea served in the shop's parlour.

Thanks to Kevin Commons for preparing this tribute.
