Leicester Castle Classic Cycle Race - Sun.18th August 2013

Top level cycle racing will make a return to Leicester this summer thanks to a partnership between Leicester City Council and British Cycling.

The inaugural Leicester Castle Classic cycle race will take place on Sunday 18 August.

Full details of the circuit are still being finalised, although organisers have confirmed that the two-hour race will take place around Castle Gardens in the city's Old Town, and along the banks of the 'Mile Straight' stretch of the River Soar.

British Cycling are hoping to attract elite level teams for the headline race, but amateur cyclists will also have the opportunity to race the circuit with a junior race, corporate challenge, and 'choppers and shoppers' event all proposed.

Races will run from midday until 6pm on traffic free roads, with entertainment, refreshments and lots of opportunities to give cycle sport a go available in the race village.

Organisers reveal race route as Britain’s top cycling teams gear up for Leicester’s new elite cycle raceOrganisers of the inaugural Leicester Castle Classic cycle race have revealed the route that some of Britain’s top professional cyclists will take when they contest the new city centre race on Sunday 18 August. The 80km ‘kermesse’ race will see riders contest laps of a fast and technical 4km anticlockwise circuit around the Old Town and Mile Straight areas of the city. Racing will start and finish on Western Boulevard where riders will then head south along the River Soar down Raw Dykes Road. At the King Power Stadium the riders will head back north along the other side of the river through De Montfort University where they will cross the bridge at Mill Lane before heading back over the river again at The Newarke to tackle the most technical part of the course around Leicester Castle which includes a tricky cobbled section. The racing will be non-stop action with riders expected to hit speeds of up to 40mph on the run into the finish. Locals can look forward to an afternoon of drama and entertainment from a top class field drawn from some of Britain’s major professional cycling teams. Entries are still open for the race but amongst those already signed up to take the start line on 18 August will be a Rapha Condor JLT team that includes double Olympic gold medallist and winner of three rounds of the 2013 Pearl Izumi Tour Series, Ed Clancy MBE and former British National Road Race Champion Kristian House. They’ll face stiff competition from Team IG Sigma Sport who will have recent Ryedale GP winner Joe Perrett riding, Node4 Giordana who will have 2013 Wales Open Criterium winner Mike Northey representing them and the Great Britain Academy Squad (100% ME) which includes World Points Race Champion Simon Yates. The elite racing gets underway at 15:00 but earlier in the afternoon there will a chance for amateur cyclists to race on the circuit in two fun races.
