Leicester Castle Classic Cycle Race - Sun.18th August 2013

Top level cycle racing will make a return to Leicester this summer thanks to a partnership between Leicester City Council and British Cycling.

The inaugural Leicester Castle Classic cycle race will take place on Sunday 18 August.

Full details of the circuit are still being finalised, although organisers have confirmed that the two-hour race will take place around Castle Gardens in the city's Old Town, and along the banks of the 'Mile Straight' stretch of the River Soar.

British Cycling are hoping to attract elite level teams for the headline race, but amateur cyclists will also have the opportunity to race the circuit with a junior race, corporate challenge, and 'choppers and shoppers' event all proposed.

Races will run from midday until 6pm on traffic free roads, with entertainment, refreshments and lots of opportunities to give cycle sport a go available in the race village.

Organisers reveal race route as Britain’s top cycling teams gear up for Leicester’s new elite cycle raceOrganisers of the inaugural Leicester Castle Classic cycle race have revealed the route that some of Britain’s top professional cyclists will take when they contest the new city centre race on Sunday 18 August. The 80km ‘kermesse’ race will see riders contest laps of a fast and technical 4km anticlockwise circuit around the Old Town and Mile Straight areas of the city. Racing will start and finish on Western Boulevard where riders will then head south along the River Soar down Raw Dykes Road. At the King Power Stadium the riders will head back north along the other side of the river through De Montfort University where they will cross the bridge at Mill Lane before heading back over the river again at The Newarke to tackle the most technical part of the course around Leicester Castle which includes a tricky cobbled section.
