'Chain Gang' Rides Saturday Mornings - Alex Hewins

I hope you are all getting on ok with your winter training, if you've got any questions don't hesitate to ask. I will have the next stage of training plans ready for the new year where you should be thinking about upping the pace to get ready for the season ahead.

You all said you would be keen on a Saturday morning club ride in the new year so these are the first steps to starting it off, once it is going there is no reason that it can't keep going through the year, depending on peoples racing and other commitments. The idea is for an organised ride of about 1.5-2hours (no cafe stops!) that will give everyone a good workout. This type of ride works best with riders in close formation, making the most of the advantage you get from riding behind people, 2 abreast (singling out on busier roads) with pairs taking 2-5 minute turns on the front, similar to a club run but a bit more concentrated on keeping a good pace. It's a club ride rather than a race so no-one should be left behind on hills, stronger riders taking more turns at the front and no-one should be criticised if they feel as if they can't take a turn, it's basically about everyone getting a good workout and if that means just hanging on to the group thats fine.

I haven't timed the route yet but the one I have in mind has a meeting place at the Crow Mills Car Park in South Wigston (we could stick with Websters but negotiating Saturday Morning traffic through Wigston in a group could be a bit frustrating) then out to Countesthorpe, Willoughby Waterleys, Ashby Magna, Gilmorton, Kimcote, Upper Bruntingthorpe, Onto Bath Lane then cross over the Welford Road to Saddington, Through KIbworth, up to 3 Gates, through Illston on the Hill and Gaulby then back to Leicester on the Gartree road.

As I said before the group should stick together for the ride, there are a couple of hills at the end, the first up to Gaulby and then into Great Stretton where it would be good to have a bit of a race to the top to make sure everyone gets a good workout but we should re-group after that.

The start date I'm suggesting is the 18th Jan and start time 9am, any comments and suggestions on the above are more than welcome. I've posted this info on the website forum so everyone can discuss it openly.

If nothing else, let me know if you are up for it!

Best wishes
